An Excerpt from a Writing Project

From Rockybado 2: A Run in the Game

Dawson and Toby Ingram were
starting to write a book. Of all things to do now, since it had stopped raining. The two of them were sick and tired of the pouring rain, and they also noticed that their cats, Felicia and Honeybunny, had both left the room to do cat things.

“What should we name this book that we’re going to write?” Toby felt compelled to ask.
“I have a few ideas running around in my head,” Dawson answered, in a somewhat joking manner.
“What are they?”
“The Ballad of the Sushi Bar, The Ballad of the Juice Bar, The Ballad of the Dessert Bar, and The Ballad of the Sundae Bar.”
“Why are all of your names associated with ballads and bars?”
“I guess it just sounded clever.”
“They are pretty clever,” Toby said.
“Now, tell me, what do you think we should name this book that we’re going to write?” Dawson felt compelled to ask.

A few seconds later….

“The Revenge of the Flying Bimblebottoms, The Boisterous Adventure of Mr. Levi, The Cunning, yet Ingenious, Plot of Master Caleb, and….” Toby started.
“And?” Dawson asked, demanding to know the last idea of Toby’s.
“The Ballad of the Crow Bar.”

Interesting. Toby was similarly following in the footsteps of his older brother. Dawson really liked the idea of The Revenge of the Flying Bimblebottoms. He thought that The Boisterous Adventure of Mr. Levi was okay; he was actually hoping for something more in the comedy genre. Dawson wasn’t too keen on The Cunning, yet Ingenious, Plot of Master Caleb; that would be more than a mouthful in one title.But….The Ballad of the Crow Bar?

That title right there could go anywhere and everywhere.

“I like The Ballad of the Crow Bar. What do you think we should write about, regarding a ballad and a crow bar?” Dawson asked.
“Anything, I guess,” Toby replied.
“We don’t really have to specifically write a ballad, but I like how the title sounds.”
“I thought that was the point in writing something. If you said it’s a ballad, it’s a ballad.”
“It happens frequently.”
“So now I’m confused.”
“The main focus should be an all-around story about a crow bar.”
“That’s a good idea.”

Dawson and Toby gathered some more ideas for a book that they wanted to write; just to show off their creative sides. Eventually, though, after thirty minutes, the two boys quit writing because they had already spent so much time trying to come up with the perfect name for their book. And then they had to spend a little more time trying to draw ideas for the content, based on the name of the title.

Why was this book going to be about a crow bar?

“I had a random idea of a crow bar pop out of my head,” Toby said to his dad about the book.
“That’s awesome. I’m sure it’s going to be a great book,” Mr. Ingram said.
“Dawson and I are both writing it.”
“Nice!”
“Thank you.”
“Oh, and I was wondering if you’d like to come with me to the store. I need a few things.”
“Okay!”

From The Magic Video Game 2: Time for Tennis

Jack Andrews, Levi Cranston's best friend, went home eventually, and Levi and his dad decided to stay up a while longer. It was now 9 o’clock in the evening, and they watched two comedy movies until about midnight.

Their mom, Victoria, Olivia, and Evelyn Maeve, Levi's sisters, were asleep at this time, and Levi and their dad decided to play video games until about 2 o’clock in the morning.

“Would you like to go to our favorite fast food joint tonight?” Levi’s dad asked.
“Now?” Levi asked back.
“Yes. Now.”
“I’m up for that!”
Levi and their dad drove to get some food, came home, and stayed up until 4 o’clock in the morning.
And what a fun night it was.

Happy Holidays from B. Levi & The World of Sci-Fi

Merry Christmas, friends! To those of you who don't celebrate, hope you're having a great day!

As promised, here is yet one more blog post for this week. And here's the surprise. Do you remember how I talked about how each family in each series celebrate Thanksgiving? Well, today I'm going to talk about how each family celebrates Christmas, so here we go!

The Ingram's (Rockybado): Dawson, Brett, David, Brody, and Toby Ingram come from a very small family. They have some family fifteen minutes east of them, as well as both sets of grandparents. After the immediate family opens presents, they invite their extended family over to spend the day with them. Normally, the Ingram's are the hosts. However, sometimes hosting alternates between households. For lunch, the family likes to do fried chicken and a few other sides. Then, they spend the afternoon relaxing at the house. Then, for dinner, the family likes to get Chinese food and look at some Christmas lights around Merrillville and Crown Point. When they have dinner, they like to watch a non-Christmas movie. Mostly comedy or sci-fi.

The Grzedek's (The Jazzy Island of Dinosaurs): Andrew, Caleb, Adam, Cameron, and Alyssa Grzedek come from a large family. They have a lot of family all over Northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland area. Starting December 23rd, the family visits their extended family members. Sometimes, they will go to their relatives' houses. And other times, they will have relatives come over to their house. On Christmas Day, the immediate family starts the day by opening presents and then going to their paternal grandparents' house for a Polish feast. They have turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and bread rolls. But everything else consists of Polish dishes. At least most of the Grzedek side of the family come together on Christmas Day to celebrate. Until the end of the day, the family spends time with their relatives, and they have another Polish feast for dinner.

The Baranovsky's/Cranston's (The Magic Video Game): Louise and Elizabeth Baranovsky, and Victoria, Olivia, Levi, and Evelyn Maeve Cranston come from a medium-sized family. They have family from Northwest Indiana and Rhode Island. The family does celebrate Hanukkah, but they do not go all out for it. However, on December 23rd, Levi spends Christmas with his girlfriend's family. On December 24th, the whole family celebrates Christmas with both sets of grandparents and second oldest half-sister, Elizabeth, and her husband, Paul Weiner. On December 25th, the family starts the day by opening presents. In the afternoon, the oldest half-sister, Louise, and her family come over to the Cranston's house, and they have a "cook-out," where they have a picnic-style Christmas lunch; they do not believe in traditional in the slightest. Everyone relaxes throughout the day. Then, they all go to look at Christmas lights and afterwards get Chinese food. After eating dinner, they all play many random games.

As you can see, each family is different in celebrating Christmas/Hanukkah. And, no matter how you are celebrating today, I hope the rest of your day is nothing short of amazing!

Happy Holidays.

From Rockybado 2: A Run in the Game

When Brody Ingram and his best friend, Andrew McCalsky, were getting ready to play video games with Toby, Brody's younger brother, someone else came inside the house. It was Brett, Brody's older brother. And no one knew why he came home so early. Brett, who normally comes home at around eight o’clock at night when he hangs out with his friend, John Coolwood, came home at 4:56in the afternoon.

How very unusual.

Even though Brett came home much earlier than expected, he came home in a very weird mood. And Brody could somehow sense that something turned out to be unexpected. Moreover something in Brett’s favor.

Apparently, Brett did not notice Andrew, Brody, and Toby playing video games. He silently went up into his room, most likely to play the electric guitar. Or maybe he was going to draw pictures. Whatever he was planning to do up in his room, he probably wanted to be alone right now.

Nonetheless, Brody quit playing video games when it was a good time to stop. He walked up the stairs to his older brother’s room. As expected, the door was closed. It might even have been locked, too. Maybe not. Hopefully not. Because Brody wanted to know what exactly was going on with Brett.

Brody knocked on the door. After a few seconds, Brett opened his door. Brody eyed his brother. Brett, for some odd reason, had tears streaming from his eyes. Something bad might have happened. Or, somehow, Brett was so overcome with emotion that he couldn’t keep it in.

“W-what happened?” Brody asked his older brother.
“The most beautiful day of my life,” Brett answered with a weak smile, once he could maintain his composure.
“Why? What happened?”
“I met a girl.”
“You met a girl?”
“I met a girl.”
“Where at?” Brody asked.
“The bowling alley,” Brett replied.
“Does she go to your school?”
“She will be a freshman at my school next year. JC knows her.”
“Is she pretty?”
“Why would I not have pulled a wimp?”

And Brett started crying again. He hid himself behind the side of his bed so that Brody would not be able to see him bawling. So, basically, Brett was acting as similarly as David, another brother of Brody's, when it came down to cute and pretty girls. However, Brody has never seen David cry over those matters.

Today, he saw Brett cry over those matters.

Brody left the room. He thought that Brett might want to be alone in his room right now. And Brody certainly did not want to talk about pretty girls. He was more concerned about when Mom was coming home with Chinese food, as well as when he and Andrew were going on their evening run.

Not that Brody doesn’t have a crush on some girls.

“So, what happened to Brett?” Andrew asked his best friend, once he came back downstairs.
“Take three wild guesses,” Brody replied.
“He isn’t feeling well, so he’s staying up in his room?”
“No.”
“He might be mad about something?”
“Absolutely not.”
“He wants to call somebody in his room, so he knows he won’t hear any noise,” Andrew guessed.
“Close, but no cigar,” Brody remarked.
“Okay, then what is it?”
“Apparently, when he was out with Coolwood tonight, he met a pretty girl at the bowling alley.”

It took a little while for Brody and Andrew to digest all of this information in one sitting. Not that Brett finding a pretty girl has ever been that hard to believe. But there were several reasons why Brett might be up in his room. Brody knew what Brett was doing up in his room; Andrew had just found out.

From The Magic Video Game 2: Time for Tennis

After Mackenzie Burbanks, Levi Cranston's girlfriend, left, Levi played video games until he heard his phone go off. He checked it, which was on the coffee table. It was Randy Lindt, often known as the Fat Pigeon, and Adam Dahnwright’s best friend.

Oh boy.

“Hello?” Levi answered with apprehension.
“We don’t market the house because we don’t mark it,” the Fat Pigeon replied.
“What does that have to do with anything?”

With a roll of the eyes, Levi then hung up. He did not have time for this. Instead, he had time to play his favorite video games. And when he heard his phone ring once again, he decided not to answer it.
Levi knew that he was going to get at least another stupid joke from the Fat Pigeon. With this in mind, he went back to playing his favorite video games.

From Rockybado 5: #SanFranciscoBound

The drive from Crown Point, Indiana to the airport in Chicago took about an hour, as expected. When Toby Ingram and their parents left, Brody and David, Toby's older brothers, quickly went through the process of getting checked in and past security. Afterwards, they found themselves sitting at the gate waiting for their flight. For about an hour and a half, David and Brody walked around the general area and got some Chinese food and iced lattes before boarding.

The time spent waiting at the gate was time well spent. The whole waiting time took less than expected. Before they knew it, David and Brody found themselves boarding the plane to head to Germany. They had a bit of a layover during their trip, but chances were it wouldn’t be that long.

David and Brody sat in the plane, and they heard the emergency instructions for the umpteenth time. Then the plane started moving toward the runway.

Everyone’s favorite part.

“You ready, David?” Brody asked his older brother.
“You ready, Brody?” David asked his younger brother.
“Absolutely, I am!”
“That Chinese food was good.”
“You know, it really was. I think that was the first time I’ve been to that place. Every time we come, I like to go to all of the restaurants and try new things,” Brody remarked.
“That’s the spirit,” David said.
“What beer are you getting on the plane?”
“I don’t know yet. What about you?”
“Not sure yet. Or I might do some wine.”
“If only we had baklava to pair with it.”
“Yasssss!”

The plane raced down the runway and then flew up. Going off the runway is by far David and Brody’s favorite part of flying in a plane. When the plane was up in the sky, the two brothers had to decide what movie to watch.

Their plan was to watch the same movie together at the same time.

The time in the airplane was going to be a lot, and so David and Brody had to make good use of it before they’d start their excursion in Germany. It was going to be several hours before they’d land at both places, and they felt like they needed to make the most out of it.

After several hours of movies, sleeping, drinking good beer, and eating okay food, David and Brody were finally in Munich, Germany.

From The Jazzy Island of Dinosaurs 2: The Sound of a B Flat

After Andrew and Caleb Grzedek had spent a great evening with their family, they both decided to sit out on the patio and enjoy the crisp evening breeze.

Neither boy said a word to each other for five straight minutes. They were just dwindling in their own thoughts, thinking about how great their summer has been so far, and the like.

Until an unfamiliar person called Caleb.

“Hello?” Caleb answered.
 “Hi,” the voice replied.
“Hello? Who are you looking for?”
“I am looking for David Savino.”
“There’s no David Savino here. You must have the wrong number,” Caleb replied.
“Oh, this is not David Savino?” the voice clarified.
“No.”
“Oh, I apologize! I have the wrong number.”
“It’s fine. Don’t worry about it!”
“Thanks, sonny."
